The staff of CTV, their families and friends, volunteer to produce the Christmas Daddies Telethon on the first Sunday in December each and every year!
The telethon is a televised pledge-based variety show broadcast live on CTV. A cast of hundreds - ranging from the very young to the young at heart - volunteer their time to assist in the production. Duties include technical set up, taking phone pledges, running auctions and performing on the show. CTV personalities and well-known guests host the show, and encourage viewers to phone in and make pledges. As well, a large number of individuals, community groups and companies who have initiated their own fundraising efforts appear on the telethon to make cheque presentations.
The uniqueness of the Christmas Daddies Telethon is that almost everyone who participates is a volunteer - from the technical side, to the people in front of the camera and those on the phones. Almost everything from lighting to food is donated by the corporate community. CTV donates airtime and technical equipment. We are also one of the longest running telethons in North America.
Since the telethon's first year in 1964, Christmas Daddies has raised a total of over $24 million dollars for less fortunate children.
There are two programs that broadcast simultaneously on CTV as the staff in each region, their family members and friends donate their time to produce the telethon. Viewers on Mainland Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island as well as viewers across Canada watching on StarChoice and Bell ExpressVu watch the programme originating from the CTV studios in Halifax with live segments from the CTV studios in Moncton. The staff & family of the CTV station in Sydney produce a programme broadcast to Cape Breton Island. Both shows celebrate the roots of the Telethon and showcase great Maritime talent from around the region.
